I recently acquired a new batch of slates from a tear off on a home on the infamous Fourth Street. I got the OK from the owner and proceeded to jump in the large dumpster and immediately filled three plastic bins with slates. I am set for a while and this acrylic painting is from this acquisition. It is entitled "Crowded Eyes", 9" x 8". It is $50.00 plus s/h. If interested you can contact me at burwellarena@att.net. A wood backing will be glued to the back for hanging and to project a little off the wall.
This is another slate from the 1994 batch that changed many times over the years. It will not change anymore since I sold it in February 2010. Plus I think it is a good piece entitled "Life is for the Birds", acrylic on slate 13" x 8".
I began the "Birdman" series in 1991 when I ran the Space Gallery on Grandriver Ave., Downtown Detroit across from the old Hudsons building before it was torn down. It was painted in oil on a kitchen door and was sold out of the Zeitgeist Gallery in 1999.
The "Birdman" is an alter ego that I recently rebirthed and is daily emerging from the studio full grown and complete. The bird figure is a symbol of freedom to me and birds are appearing more and more in my paintings recently. Stay tooned.
Birdman-Abstract Figure by Detroit Outsider Artist DMC
I live in Detroit, Michigan. In 1994 on Grandriver Ave. and Canfield, walking in an open field behind a small scrapyard, I uncovered & discovered in a few mounds of clay many slate shingle fragments that had been collected from some unfortunate (burnt out?) house in the area? and secretly dumped. I filled three milk crates with the treasure. Those slates turned out to be my next exhibit at the 2 South Gallery, Downtown Detroit in May of 1995. I have done hundreds of paintings from that batch and this piece "Bird with Red Shoes" came from the empty field. It is a slate that has gone through many changes over the years and is acrylic on slate. A piece of wood is glued to the back for hanging purposes and to project it a little off the wall. It is 9" x 6" and can be purchased for $50.00 plus S/H. Contact me at burwellarena@att.net if interested.
